“THANK YOU for dinner. It was really good.”
Corbin relaxed into Luke’s bed. He’d been happier at Luke’s place than anywhere he’d ever been in his life. It had been weeks since he’d been back to his own apartment other than to drop off clothes and come back. The restless niggle was still in the back of his head, the feeling of a job left undone, of stashes left to plunder, but he tried to ignore it.
“I don’t have too many dishes mastered, but that one I can do with my eyes closed.” Luke kneeled on the bed and leaned over Corbin to give him a long kiss. “You have to leave tomorrow, right?”
Corbin nodded. He’d manufactured a job in Paris so it wouldn’t look weird that he wasn’t working. It was a “big one,” so he didn’t have to take another trip for a long time. He figured he’d mess around in the city for a day or two, buy some clothes, and then come home to Luke. He didn’t want to leave. London was beautiful in June, and all he wanted was to hang around Luke’s place, go shopping, and… no. Don’t think about that damn diamond. He’d been doing really well for the past few days, but it was nearly impossible not to think about it. Every cell in Corbin’s body hated leaving a job undone. Luke’s team couldn’t narrow it down to a single house, could they? Especially when they didn’t expect him to strike anymore.
“You want dessert?” Luke asked. “I bought gelato on the way home. Mint, like you like.”
“That sounds amazing. I’ll help you get it.” He hauled himself up and followed Luke to the kitchen. The living room only had one lamp lit; it was soft and dark and homey. Corbin maneuvered his way around furniture and into the small updated kitchen.
“I’ll get bowls out,” he said.
“I love you,” Luke’s voice rang out, quiet but gruff in the silence of the room. “Fuck. I can’t believe I just said that.”
Corbin’s hand shook where it rested on the cabinet knob. “Did you mean it?” he asked.
“Yes. I mean, Jesus. I don’t have much experience with this. I don’t have any experience with this, but yeah. I mean it. I didn’t mean to say it, but I meant it. I know you’re still skittish, and we weren’t planning to be serious but—”
Corbin held a hand over Luke’s mouth. “I love you too.”
He was terrified of what he’d just said. Here he was with the guy who literally had the ability to fuck Corbin’s future in every possible way. He was dangerous and so very not on Corbin’s side of the law, but every cell in Corbin’s body told him to step closer. Every hair on his skin told him to take the gelato container out of Luke’s hand and twine their fingers together. The stars floating in his blood must’ve tilted his head back and made him brush a soft kiss over Luke’s lips. But only he could take credit for what he did next.
